Check the Water
Test to ensure that water is running in both the hot and cold taps at the kitchen sink. If it is, continue to the step below. If the water isn't running, you’ll need to check the water supply at the green tank which is up the hill from the new cabin. If there is no water in the tank, call Susie (530-756-3494 or 530-902-4243) or Kathy (530-265-2529 or 916-201-9604.)
Check the Electricity
Go to the electrical fuse box on the outside wall between the screen door and the door to the wood shed (see location in the Property Map above).
The red box under the meter is the fuse box. Lift up the front panel to view the fuses.
The switch on the top left of the box (labeled MAIN) should read ON as shown in the picture, but if not, then use the wire handle to pull out the switch, turn it over, and plug it in. The water heater switch on the top right (labeled RANGE) should read OFF when you arrive, so you will need to pull it out, turn it over and plug it back in so that it reads ON as shown in the picture.
Turn on the Gas Stove
First you will need to go outside in the front yard and locate the small propane tank that is close to the right side of the rock wall. You will need to turn the knob on the top of the tank to the ON position.
Back inside, to turn on the gas stove, first locate the gas valve inside the cabinet to the left of the stove. Open the door to the cabinet holding the garbage can and find the gas valve on the wooden brace on the right.
The valve is just above and to the right of the top of the garbage can, shown in the off position (in the picture above) with the handle at a right angle to the pipe. Turn it on, leaving the handle lined up with the pipe, as shown below.
Remove the four burner supports from the stovetop and then lift off the top of the stove. Using a match, light the two burner pilot lights, located midway between the left and right banks of burners. Then open the broiler drawer of the stove and light the oven pilot light on the top back of this compartment. Replace the stovetop and supports and close the broiler drawer.
Replace the Silverware Drawer
AND Store the Griddle
You should find the silverware drawer and the griddle on the kitchen table.
Lift the silverware drawer off the kitchen table and slide it back into its slot in the cabinet on the wall to the left of the sink. Place the griddle on the counter close to the wine glasses.
Summer Closing Instructions
(Old Cabin)
Between March 1 and November 1, leave the water supply connected when you close the cabin.
Turn Off the Gas Stove
Go outside to the small propane tank close to the rock wall and turn the knob to the OFF position. Then, locate the gas valve inside the cabinet to the left of the stove. Open the door to the cabinet holding the garbage can and find the gas valve on the wooden brace on the right. Turn off the gas valve, leaving the valve handle at right angles to the copper pipe, as shown in the picture below.
Remove the Silverware Drawer
To prevent mouse problems, remove the silverware drawer and place it on the kitchen table. Also, place the griddle, paper towels and tissues on the table, as shown in the picture below.
replenish the Wood Supply
If supplies of firewood, kindling, and newspapers are low, bring new supplies in from the woodshed.
Empty the Water in the Shower
Using the squeegee under the sink in the bathroom, push the water that accumulates in the corner of the shower to the center so that it will drain.
Turn Off the Water Heater
Go to the electrical fuse box. Pull out the switch on the top right of the box, turn it over, and plug it back in so that it reads OFF at the top of the switch, as shown in the image.
Leave Water Running
September 15 to November 1, or March 1 to April 15: connect a hose to the faucet outside the kitchen window. (See the Property Map above.) Run the hose over the rock wall, and turn on the faucet so that you have a gentle flow of water.
Lock the Cabin
Please take all of your food when you leave, especially any perishable food.
Place your garbage in the can in the pumphouse or take it with you for disposal.
Brace the bathroom, living room, and kitchen windows and lock the doors: back, front, porch, and woodshed.
