Verify that Electricity is on

If there is no electricity, do not use the water to flush the toilet or use the sinks and shower. The septic system requires electricity to function.

CHECK THE WATER

Check to see if water is running in both the hot and cold taps at the kitchen sink. If there is water, continue to the steps below. If there is no water, you will need to check the water supply for the upper spring at the green tank. (As of June 2019, the lower spring is not functional.)

Turn on the Water Heater

If the water is running properly, go to the electrical panel behind the front door and flip the switch labeled “Water Heater” to the ON position (toward the center of the panel).

Turn on the Oven/Stove

At the electrical panel, flip the switch labeled “Oven” to the ON position (toward the center of the panel).

replenish the Wood Supply

If supplies of firewood, kindling, and newspapers are low, bring new supplies in from the woodshed.

Turn Off the Water Heater and Stove/Oven

Go to the electrical panel, located behind the front door, and flip the switches labeled “Water Heater” and “Oven” to the off position (away from the center of the panel). Do not turn off any of the other switches.

CLEAR Septic pump

Flush the toilet at least three times or until you hear a “clunk” from the power box on the outside of the cabin close to the front door. After the “clunk,” flush the toilet three more times. This clears out the grinder pump of the septic system and leaves clean water in it until the next guests arrive.

LEAVE The Water Running (Depending on the Dates)

Between September 15 and November 1 or from March 1 to April 15, connect a hose to the kitchen faucet (outside – see fig 1), run the hose over the bank of the creek, and turn on the faucet so that you have a strong flow of water.

The “New Cabin” deck overlooks Rock Creek. It is a lovely place to sit and enjoy the sound of the creek flowing by while enjoying a good book or a relaxing nap.
