History of Our New Cabin

As they raised their children, Vernon and Jessie planned to spend their retirement years living in the cabin.

Eventually, they decided that to gain a comfortable year-round home, they’d need to tear the cabin down and rebuild from scratch. In the mid-1950s, they set that plan in motion by building a “new cabin” directly across the street from the original cabin. They figured on living in it while tearing down and rebuilding the first cabin.

For whatever reason, the old cabin was never razed. Both cabins were used extensively during the 1960s and ’70s. Phyllis spent many summers at the cabins with her three children (Kathy, Peter and Susie) and her husband, Elmer, who trucked logs out of the county.

Vernon and Jessie visited frequently from their home in Napa, but they never settled full-time in Goodyears. In 1973, they deeded the property to Phyllis and Elmer. Vernon died in 1983 and Jessie in 1992.

After Phyllis died in 2004, the cabins became the joint property of Kathy, Peter and Susie.
